The NHIVNA / Gilead HIV Research Nurse Award has been awarded for the first time this year, recognising a nurse who has conducted a unique piece of research or audit in 2018.

The NHIVNA/Gilead Sciences HIV Nurse of the Year Award 2017
The NHIVNA/ Gilead HIV Nursing Award was set up in 2007 to recognise the outstanding achievements of nurses who have made a significant or unique contribution to the care and quality of life of people with HIV.

'Michelle is an enthusiastic and motivated HIV nurse specialist. She is compassionate and applies this effectively to an extensive knowledge base of this field of nursing. Michelle has been a committed Chair of NHIVNA and has worked tirelessly to improve the care of clients and the knowledge and skills of nurses working within the speciality of HIV nursing.
She has a passion for the psychological health of her clients and has instigated collaboration with the British Psychological Society, which has resulted in a national audit of psychological care for PLWH and the development of an education innovation for nurses. In addition, she has been instrumental in developing an academy of leadership for HIV nurses, through NHIVNA.
On a personal level, Michelle is an inspiration. She has a commitment and energy that I have never seen surpassed. Michelle exhausts me just watching what she is achieving. I have been very fortunate to have Michelle Croston come into my life, within my speciality and to demonstrate a passion for the profession that means so much to me. The requirements for this award states contributions in relation to seven clear categories and I think that Michelle is a leader in each category. I am more than happy to be able to nominate her for this award.
I would love to nominate Michelle for this award as she ticks all the boxes. I first had the pleasure of witnessing Michelle’s heart for others when attending a NHIVNA conference many years ago. Michelle was in the audience and I asked her for directions to my hotel having never met her before. I was wowed when she wrote down detailed directions and drew me a map.
Evaluation forms are always a problem for me as I have dyslexia so end up writing very safe comments. One lunch time I got speaking to Michelle again and mentioned this as a frustration of mine. Michelle’s response was ‘find me at the end of conference and I would be happy to write while you dictate’.
The implementation of nurse and health care assistance competency was a great example of establishing new standards of care in HIV especially when the HIV courses were no longer running.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to be given a place on a course that Michelle had organised for training nurses to achieve their outcomes by empowering them with the tools to do so. The course was called the NHIVNA Academy-Influencing without Authority.
Michelle has been NHIVNA chair now for the last couple to years and has served with such passion. Her energy and love for what she does in making changes to HIV care and her colleagues is infectious. Michelle is always so modest about what she has achieved and is a true blessing to us all, always putting others before herself.'

NHIVNA Lifetime Achievement Award
Mr Duncan Scott
This Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by NHIVNA to the late Duncan Scott from Barts Health NHS Trust, London to acknowledge his contribution to HIV nursing over the years.
James Hand was invited on stage to say a few words on behalf of colleagues at the Grahame Hayton Unit.
The award was accepted by Duncan's sister Barbara Ash, Barbara commented that she felt somewhat comforted but also overwhelmed by the supportive comments she has received about Duncan since his passing. She hoped that his memory would continue to inspire his colleagues and others who knew him.
